Nashville City Cemetery

Nashville’s oldest public cemetery, at 1001 Fourth Ave S, is still an active cemetery. Burials take place on existing family lots, and cremated remains are allowed. Lot owners can give permission in writing through the Metro Historical Commission, 615-862-7970. Nashville.gov

Questions to ask a cemetery

  • What does the plot cost, and what does opening and closing the grave cost? These are separate.
  • Is an outer burial container or vault required?
  • What are the rules for headstones, and can we buy one elsewhere?
  • Are there extra fees for weekend burials?
  • Is there an endowment or perpetual care fee?

Does a cemetery plot include the grave opening?

Usually not. Opening and closing the grave is a separate charge, and many cemeteries also require a vault.
