Start with these steps

  1. Set a rough family budget before you compare packages.
  2. Ask the funeral home for its General Price List. This is its written list of all prices. Also ask for the price of each service you are thinking about.
  3. Write down each type of cost on its own line. This includes transportation, staff services, use of the building, and items for sale like caskets and urns. It also includes permits, the obituary, and cemetery and crematory fees. Also list cash advances. A cash advance is money the funeral home pays to someone else for you.
  4. Ask which charges you pay to the provider and which you pay to someone else.
  5. Compare totals for the same services. Also compare cancellation terms, deposits, and when payment is due.
