Good to know

  • There is no federal law that requires bereavement leave. The FMLA doesn’t cover it, though it can cover your own serious health condition.
  • Most leave is set by your employer. Your handbook or HR can tell you how many days you have and whether they are paid.
  • You can ask for more. Many employers allow extra days, vacation, or working from home for a while. It’s fine to ask.
  • Some employers ask for proof, such as an obituary or the funeral program. Ask what they need so it doesn’t hold up your pay.
  • Travel counts. If the funeral is far away, say so. Some policies give extra days for travel.
