The gap nobody warns you about
A life insurance payout normally takes a few weeks from the day you file a certified death certificate. The funeral home will normally want paying before the service. So families who are told “there is a policy, we will be fine” often still have to find several thousand dollars in a week.
The thing that bridges it is called an assignment of benefits. The person named on the policy signs over part of the payout to the funeral home. The insurer then pays the funeral home directly, and whatever is left goes to the family as usual. Most funeral homes accept this. It is routine, and you are allowed to ask for it by name.
Three questions to ask before you sign an assignment. What is the fee, in dollars, and is it taken out of the payout? What happens if the insurer refuses the claim, and who owes the bill then? How long before you release the body to the cemetery or crematory? Ask for the answers in writing. A funeral home that will not put them in writing is telling you something.
What this family may be able to use
Six questions. Nothing is saved, nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no account. We ask because most families have more than they think and find out too late.
The ones people forget
Life cover through their job. Many employers include life insurance worth one or two years of salary, and plenty of people never mention it at home. Ring the employer’s HR or benefits office and ask directly. Ask about an accidental death policy too, which pays on top and is often separate.
A policy nobody can find. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners runs a free Life Insurance Policy Locator. You give the name, date of birth, date of death and Social Security number from the death certificate, and insurers search their own records. If there is a policy and you are the beneficiary, the company contacts you.
Union, credit union, church or association membership. Small death benefits attach to all of these and are almost never claimed, because nobody thinks to ask. If they carried a membership card, it is worth one phone call.
A pre-paid funeral they never mentioned. If they arranged and paid for a funeral years ago, that money exists and is held either in a trust or in an insurance policy. Look for paperwork from a funeral home, and ring the funeral home they would most likely have used.
What the government pays
Veterans. For a death not related to service, the VA pays a burial allowance of $1,032 and a plot allowance of $1,032, at the rates in force from 1 October 2026. For a service-connected death it is $2,000. Burial in a national cemetery, a headstone or marker, and a burial flag cost nothing on top. For a non-service-connected death you have two years from the burial to claim. The VA sets out who qualifies, and the rules are specific enough to be worth reading rather than assuming.
Social Security. A one-off lump-sum death payment of $255, paid to a surviving husband or wife, or in some cases to eligible children. Two years to claim. The SSA explains who can receive it. We mention the amount plainly because people are often told Social Security “covers the funeral”, and it does not.
If the death was work-related. Workers’ compensation in both Tennessee and North Carolina includes a burial benefit, separate from anything else. Tell the employer in writing that you are claiming it.
Four things worth knowing before you sign anything
An assignment is not a payment. The insurer still has to approve the claim. If it refuses, the family owes the funeral home the whole bill. Ask what happens in that case before you sign, not after.
A policy bought in the last two years can be investigated. Most policies have a contestability period, usually two years, during which the insurer may check whether anything on the application was wrong. That can delay or defeat a claim on a policy the family was relying on.
Mortgage or loan cover does not pay for a funeral. Credit life and mortgage protection pay off that specific debt. It is still worth claiming, but it will not put money towards the service.
Do not cash in a policy to pay a funeral bill. Surrendering a policy, or borrowing against one, usually costs far more than arranging payment another way. If someone suggests it, take a day and ask somebody who is not selling you anything.
General information, not insurance or financial advice, and Hestia does not sell insurance or take a fee from anyone named on this page. Amounts and rules change, so check the linked official pages. If a claim is refused and you think it should not have been, your state insurance department will look at it: Tennessee through the Department of Commerce and Insurance, North Carolina through the Department of Insurance.
Questions families ask
Can life insurance pay the funeral home directly?
Often yes, through an assignment of benefits. The beneficiary signs over part of the payout to the funeral home, which is then paid by the insurer instead of the family paying up front. Most funeral homes accept this, usually through a third-party funding company. Ask what the fee is and get it in writing before you sign.
How long does a life insurance payout take?
Usually a few weeks once a certified death certificate is filed, and longer if there is a question about the cause of death, a disputed beneficiary, or the policy was bought in the last two years. The funeral home will normally want paying sooner than that, which is why assignment exists.
What happens if the insurance claim is refused?
An assignment is not a payment. If the insurer refuses the claim, the family still owes the funeral home the full bill. This is the single most important thing to understand before signing an assignment, and it is the reason to ask the funeral home what happens in that case before, not after.
How do I find a life insurance policy I cannot locate?
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners runs a free Life Insurance Policy Locator. You submit the deceased person’s name, date of birth, date of death and Social Security number, all of which are on the death certificate, and participating insurers search their records. If a policy is found and you are the beneficiary, the company contacts you. It costs nothing.
Does Social Security pay for a funeral?
Not really. There is a one-off lump-sum death payment of $255, which goes to a surviving spouse, or in some cases to eligible children. You have two years to claim it. It is worth claiming, but it is not a funeral benefit.
What does the VA pay towards a veteran’s funeral?
For a death not related to service, a burial allowance of $1,032 and a plot allowance of $1,032, at the rates effective 1 October 2026. For a service-connected death it is $2,000. Burial in a VA national cemetery, a headstone or marker, and a burial flag are provided separately at no cost. Eligibility rules are specific, so check the VA page.
While you are working out the money
What a funeral actually costs near you is the other half of this. We publish funeral homes’ own price lists side by side, each with the date it was issued, so you can see what you are being asked to fund before anyone asks you to decide.
